Who we are
The State Solicitor's Office is the Western Australian Government’s principal legal adviser. The office enables government action, manages the state’s legal risk, and supports the Attorney General in his role as First Law Officer with authoritative advice on key legal issues.

Legal sections in our office include Civil Litigation, Public & General Litigation, State Counsel, Advice, Policy and Public Law, Native Title and State Lands, and Commercial.
About the program
Our 2 year graduate program provides an excellent foundation for a career in law. You gain practical experience in the full range of practice areas in our office by rotating through each of our practice areas.
In 2026 all law graduates employed in this program will be offered a two year contract.
You commence as a level 4 Law Graduate for the first 12 months then transition to a Solicitor (L2LG) for the second half of the program (once eligible to practice law in Western Australia). You may be offered permanency when you successfully complete the 2 year program.
Program highlights
- Learn the practice of law and its application to the operations of the government of the state of Western Australia, its departments and instrumentalities.
- Undertake work across all practice areas on a rotational basis including:
- a wide range of litigation in courts and tribunals at all levels
- appearing as counsel in courts and tribunals on suitable matters where admission to practice is not a pre-condition to the appearance
- researching and preparing draft legal advice of a range of complexity
- assisting the drafting of commercial documentation.
- Liaison directly with our clients in the conduct and management of matters.
- Develop an in-depth understanding of how different government departments and agencies operate.
- Mentoring from experienced staff, training and support.
- Access to flexible working arrangements including working from home arrangements and generous leave options for enhanced work life balance.
- Superannuation 11%, increasing to 12% by 1 July 2025 with salary packaging options.

What we’re looking for in candidates
As we are responsible for providing broad based, high quality legal services to the Government of WA and its agencies and departments, we are seeking applicants with:
- excellent academic results in your law degree and a particular commitment to public service and the values of the State Solicitor's Office
- excellent communication skills and ability to work well with others while also being able to work independently when required.

Applications are open to the following people:
- Law graduates who have not completed the coursework component of an approved practical legal training course. These graduates are required to complete a practical legal training course during their 12 month legal traineeship (paid for by the State Solicitor's Office).
- Law graduates who have completed the coursework component of an approved practical legal training course (such as that provided by the College of Law) but have not been admitted to practice law. These graduates still undertake a 12 month legal traineeship with the same level of remuneration as the graduates in 1 above but do not have to undertake further external practical legal training provided the approved course work is completed before they start.
- Law graduates who have completed the requirements of an approved practical legal training course (such as that provided by the College of Law) and have already been admitted to practice law but have not yet practiced law. These graduates still undertake a 12 month legal traineeship with the same level of remuneration as the graduates in 1 and 2 above but do not have to undertake further external practical legal training.
