Certain items are designated as prohibited in legislation and you should review the Firearms Act 2024, the Firearms Regulations 2024, the Weapons Act 1999 and the Weapons Regulations 1999 which can be found in the Related Information section below.

In addition to state Legislation, imported items are also subject to federal legislation and as such an applicant should also consult Australian Border Force and review the legislation Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956.

It is important an applicant confirms the item they are seeking to import is permitted as this will avoid any financial loss through purchase cost and return postage should the item not be permitted.

Please note: Applicants must apply for a Prohibited Import B709 Permit prior to ordering and shipping the item(s).

Storage in transit

The Firearms Act 2024 requires specific actions with regards to any firearms or related things that are in transit (i.e. away from the approved storage location), but in the possession of the respective licence holder for that firearm or related things.

  3. When not in immediate possession, be stored in the best location to ensure its safekeeping (e.g. a locked container or cabinet within the vehicle, secured in the boot or locked glovebox, secured in accommodation that the person is using).

Additionally, where being secured firearms must be secured separately from other related things, including ammunition, magazines, bolts and if in a vehicle must not be left unattended unless the vehicle is locked and the firearm and related items are not visible from the exterior of the vehicle (Section 308 of the Firearms Act 2024).

Containers used to secure firearms or related things, must be secured to the vehicle either fixed in placed or locked to a part of the vehicle (e.g. padlocked to seat belt anchor point; bolted in the boot).

If a firearm is to be left unattended, consideration should be given to using approved shared storage, temporary storage with another licence holder or a licensed trade storage location.
