Criminal Justice Research Grants

The Western Australian Office of Crime Statistics and Research (WACSAR) is responsible for administering an annual Criminal Justice Research Grants program to support research that makes a practical contribution to improving the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in WA.

Criminal Property Confiscation Grants Program

The Criminal Property Confiscation Grants Program (CPCGP) provides funds of up to $200,000 to eligible organisations for projects that aim to address the impact and harm caused by criminal activities.

Cultural Services Innovation- Aboriginal Leadership (Culture and Language )

These are programs dedicated to a reduction in the over-representation of Aboriginal people in custody through language and leadership programs designed and delivered by Aboriginal people.

The Department recognises the importance of providing cultural programs and services to Aboriginal people in prisons and community centres and has partnered with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations to deliver Aboriginal Cultural (Language and Leadership) Programs across the Western  Australia.

About the Program

The Aboriginal Cultural (Language and Leadership) Program  supports Aboriginal people’s cultural identity, personal development, leadership, and empowerment. The program strives to create better pathways for Aboriginal people, their families, and their communities.

There are currently five grant agreements with local place-based Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO) which enable the delivery of cultural programs into six metropolitan and three regional custodial sites.

Excluding the delivery of the Western Desert Justice Program into Roebourne Regional Prison, the Department’s partnerships have provided access to culture-based services and programs in custody for:

  • 233 Aboriginal men
  • 202 Aboriginal women
  • 54 Aboriginal young people.

Driver Training and Education Program

The program assists people in regional and remote communities in contact with the justice system to access driving instruction, driver education and assistance with administrative and testing procedures to obtain or regain a motor vehicle driver’s licence.

About the Program

Through Royalties for Regions funding, the Department assist not-for-profit community organisations to deliver the Enhanced Driver Training and Education for Regional and Remote Communities Program.

Kimberley Juvenile Justice Strategy

The Kimberley Juvenile Justice Strategy (KJJS) supports a range of community-led place-based initiatives across the Kimberley to engage Aboriginal young people in culturally safe activities that divert them from the criminal justice system.
