Petroleum Relinquishment Collection

The Petroleum Relinquishment Collection is made up of slides and residues generated from sampling of petroleum and geothermal well samples. These include:

  • Palynology slides
  • Palynology residues
  • Micropaleontological slides
  • Micropaleontological residues
  • Petrology thin sections
  • Petrology offcuts, SEM stubs and resin blocks, etc

You can view the availability of material in the Western Australian State Petroleum Relinquishment Collection on WAPIMS and request a loan using the Paleontological Material Loan Request Form.

For Commonwealth well sample materials stored at the Perth Core Library under NOPDCR agreement, please use NOPIMS to view availability of material and email Geoscience Australia at ausgeodata@ga.gov.au to request a loan.

Mineral Relinquishment Collection

The Mineral Relinquishment Collection is made up of derivatives and residual sample materials generated from sampling of mineral drillhole samples. These include:

  • Polished thin sections
  • Petrology offcuts, billets, SEM stubs and resin blocks, etc
  • Polished block mounts
  • Lab pulps/powders
  • Mineral separates
  • Palynology slides and residues
  • Micropaleontological slides and residues

Conditions of loan

The conditions for borrowing slide and residue material are listed below:

  1. Loans are initially for a period of 6 months unless other terms are agreed to. This loan period may be extended upon application.
  2. The department reserves the right to recall any material at short notice.
  3. A report containing both basic and interpretative results of any examination of paleontological and petrological material should be submitted and all loan materials returned to the department by the end of the agreed loan period. The report is to be submitted in PDF format and clearly state the approval number. The report will be released as open-file 6 months after the material is made available.
  4. Holotypes and paratypes of any new species described from the material are to be reposited with the department.

In the case of residues and undigested sidewall cores, any slides or other preparations made from this material, as well as unused residue and sidewall core, are to be returned to the department.
