The Western Australian (WA) Government Artificial Intelligence (AI) Advisory Board provides advice to WA Government agencies on risk mitigation, to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of AI in the WA public sector.
The Board brings independent technical and ethical expertise to project reviews and can recommend further mitigations and controls to balance key risks.
The Office of Digital Government at the Department of the Premier and Cabinet is responsible for the Secretariat function of the AI Advisory Board.
In January 2024, the Minister for Innovation and Digital Economy announced appointments to the inaugural AI Advisory Board. Read more about the Appointments to the AI Advisory Board announced in the Media Statement.
Meeting dates

Meeting papers will be circulated to Board members a week before each meeting.

Natalia Kacperek, Chair
As the Chief Data Officer at the Office of Digital Government in the WA Department of the Premier and Cabinet, Natalia Kacperek leads initiatives that leverage government data to drive better decision-making and improve citizen outcomes. Natalia was instrumental in developing PeopleWA, the whole-of-government linked data asset, and led the establishment of the Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Legislation in WA.
Ian Oppermann
Dr. Ian Oppermann is a leading figure in AI and data science. As the NSW Government’s Chief Data Scientist from 2015 to 2023, he led the development of the NSW AI Assurance Framework and held numerous roles including chairing the NSW Government’s AI Review Committee and Smart Places Advisory Council. Ian Oppermann is also the Data Standards Chair for Digital ID and Consumer Data Right.
Wei Liu
A/Prof. Wei Liu is a distinguished academic and researcher at the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Western Australia (UWA) bridging the gap between advanced AI methodologies and their practical applications. She leads the UWA Centre for Natural and Technical Language Processing, focusing on deep learning methods for knowledge graph construction and analysis. A/Prof. Liu’s work has received numerous awards, including the Best Contribution to Science Award at Digital Image Computing: Techniques and Applications 2020.
Gohar Rind
Mr. Gohar Rind is a Badimaya Yamatji man and the Managing Director of Yira Yarkiny Group, WA’s first Indigenous cyber security organisation. Mr Rind previously worked in the energy and resources sector including at Woodside, Rio Tinto and BHP where he gained exposure to AI tools as a cyber analyst. Gohar’s experience includes being a general manager at Wailitj Foundation conducting community outreach to build capability for Indigenous business owners enables important representation and developments in WA’s innovation landscape.
Alex Jenkins
Mr. Alex Jenkins is the Director of the WA Data Science Innovation Hub (WADSIH) at Curtin University, successfully leading AI and data science projects across multiple industries, including advising WA Government departments on the responsible use of AI. As the chair and founder of the Curtin AI in Research Group (CAIR), Mr. Jenkins has been a prominent AI thought leader, leading initiatives to integrate AI into research at Curtin University, provide strategic guidance on AI use, and advises on ethical AI policy.
Janie Plant
Ms. Janie Plant is a Technology Contracts Lawyer at Capgemini Australia Pty Ltd, with nearly 30 years of digital leadership spanning corporate, legal, and societal priorities in technology. At Capgemini, Ms Plant assists with reviewing and deploying Generative AI tools, ensuring compliance with global AI regulations and ethical guidelines and has led initiatives to integrate Generative AI tools into legal teams. Janie is also the Chair of Women in Technology WA (WiTWA); a not-for-profit advocating for increased representation of women and girls in STEM fields and is on the Association of Corporate Counsel’s Legal Technology and Innovation Community Committee.
Adam Lloyd
Mr. Adam Lloyd has over two decades of experience in AI, healthcare innovation, and data science. He led the development of the Health in a Virtual Environment (HIVE) Service at East Metropolitan Health Service, using AI to detect early signs of patient deterioration; for which he was recognised, earning the 2021 Innovating Government Award in the WA Incite Awards , and the 2021 Australian Computer Society Award for ICT Service Transformation. His leadership fosters real-world, ethical application of AI, expanding a data-driven culture to position Western Australia as a global leader of transformative AI applications in healthcare.
Do I need to stop my project if it is reviewed by the Board?
Show moreA project can continue to progress while under AI Advisory Board review. The advice of the AI Advisory Board is non-binding. It is recommended that agencies consider it fully to ensure sound risk mitigation.
