Telstra and WA Police team up to help victims of domestic violence

• More than 400 mobile phones donated to victims of family and domestic violence 

Police Minister Michelle Roberts has praised a partnership between Telstra and WA Police to help victims of domestic violence.

The State Family Violence Unit today took delivery of 100 smart phones donated by Telstra.

The phones serve as a vital communication point for victims of family and domestic violence who do not have a phone, or who may have had their phones damaged by a violent partner.

The phones come with a starter SIM card and pre-paid credit.

They also include an in-built duress capability, which enables immediate contact with the Police Operations Centre.

This ensures police officers can be dispatched to a victim's location on priority.

The WA Police Force has handed out more than 300 mobile phones to victims of family and domestic violence as a result of its ongoing relationship with Telstra.

Comments attributed to Police Minister Michelle Roberts:

"The State Government is determined to do what it can to wipe out the scourge of family and domestic violence.

"This is an example of a local initiative, which may very well represent a lifeline for victims trapped in an abusive relationship.

"At the very least, it will allow victims to stay safely connected to police and other support services as they navigate a sometimes horrific chapter in their lives.

"I congratulate Telstra on this partnership with the WA Police Force."
