Community Services Minister Simone McGurk today opened a new six-bedroom facility in South Bunbury to provide young people who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, with purpose-built accommodation.

Accordwest's crisis accommodation service, which is commonly referred to as BunYAP, was previously delivered from a facility that required extensive renovations. The organisation decided to build a purpose-built facility that was more centrally located and better suited to the needs of young people.

The State Government provides more than $5 million annually for Accordwest to deliver community initiatives, including youth accommodation and support services, out of home care services, and homeless accommodation and support services.

Accordwest bought the land and paid for the construction costs of BunYAP House, with all the work on the building, from architect to builders, being sourced locally. A Lotterywest grant for $27,565 has enabled the purchase of furniture and electrical fittings.

Accordwest is a not-for-profit community service organisation that is based in Bunbury and has been operating since 1983.

Comments attributed to Community Services Minister Simone McGurk:

"Accordwest has shown incredible commitment to constructing BunYAP House. I would not only like to say thank you, but also congratulate them for providing a range of important services that support vulnerable young people in the South-West.

"BunYAP House is modern and practical accommodation that provides young people with a space where they feel comfortable, and accessibility for those who have disability.

"The State Government is committed to assisting vulnerable and at-risk people who may face a number of challenges including homelessness, substance abuse, mental health issues and interaction with the justice and child protection system."

Comments attributed to Bunbury MLA Don Punch:

"Bunbury is so fortunate to be home to such a proactive community organisation as Accordwest, and I would like to extend my thanks to Neil Hamilton and all his team for the commitment they have to making a positive difference in our community.

"Providing a safe secure environment for vulnerable young people is vital for their long-term wellbeing and I am so pleased to see this new facility open in Bunbury.

"The State Government is absolutely committed to supporting vulnerable people in our community, and to see initiatives like this come from the non-government sector demonstrates our community shares this commitment."
