Urban wasteland transformed for public housing
20/6/07
A vacant block near the East Perth rail terminal has been transformed into an apartment complex providing homes for up to 80 people.
Housing and Works Minister Michelle Roberts today officially opened Thomas Apartments, a complex of 37 apartments built on land in Cheriton Street, East Perth.
A total of 25 of the units comprised a mix of 1 and 2 bedroom designs that had been created especially for seniors.
"This complex is ideally located near public transport and a range of community facilities which will be a real benefit to the new residents," Mrs Roberts said.
"It is a great example of the State Government's commitment to providing quality public housing."
As part of the development a park has been constructed adjacent to the apartments, with a playground, barbecue area and shelter.
"The project was a collaborative effort involving the City of Perth, the West Australian Government Railways Commission, the East Perth Redevelopment Authority, Perth MLA John Hyde, the Norwood Park Action Group, and the Department of Housing and Works," the Minister said.
Mr Hyde said Thomas Apartments was the result of the stakeholders working together in a creative and co-operative way, to produce the first class accommodation.
Morley Davis Architects designed the project, with the building works undertaken by Universal Constructions.
Building commenced in July 2005 with the total project costing $8.7million.
The building has been named after Bob Thomas, who retired recently as Acting Director General of the Department of Housing and Works after 42 years public service.
