Sport and Recreation boost for Northern Goldfields
15/02/06
A Northern Goldfields sports and recreation program will commence shortly through the allocation of $55,000 to the Shire of Leonora from the Goldfields Esperance Regional Development Scheme.
The project is a combined Leonora, Laverton and Menzies Shire initiative, and the program will encompass all towns and communities within this area.
Goldfields-Esperance Minister John Bowler said a Northern Goldfields Physical Activity co-ordinator would be appointed to develop a co-ordinated approach to the provision of physical activity initiatives for people of all ages, and included all towns and communities within the shires.
"This project has the potential to improve living standards for people of all ages and backgrounds through the increase in physical activity and interaction between communities in the Northern Goldfields region," Mr Bowler said
"With a high percentage of indigenous people living in the Northern Goldfields this project will support an increase in health and social outcomes for all."
It is intended that a sport and recreation management committee be developed, with representatives from all shires and key stakeholders, to develop a strategic regional plan to increase physical activity, sport participation, and sport development throughout the region.
The project aims to deliver a whole-of-community, co-ordinated approach to increasing physical activity, sport participation and talent development. It will also provide health, educational and social benefits to all members of the communities in the Northern Goldfields.
The co-ordinator will reside in Leonora and will initially be an employee of the Shire of Leonora.
The State Government is committed to the facilitation of effective partnerships between Government and regional communities.
The project has received financial support from the Indigenous Coordination Centre and Department of Sport and Recreation, with additional financial and in-kind contributions from participating shires and Minara Resources.
The Goldfields Esperance Development Commission administers the Goldfields Esperance Regional Development Scheme, which is funded by the State Government's Regional Investment Fund.
