Principal tops the State
A principal from an isolated Wheatbelt school has topped the State in the prestigious 2007 Rotary Principal of the Year Award.
Education and Training Minister Mark McGowan announced Babakin Primary School Principal Linda Crombie as the award winner at a breakfast ceremony this morning.
As an added surprise, Mr McGowan announced the prize money had increased four-fold to $40,000 for the winner and from $1,000 to $5,000 for the five finalists.
"This award, which was founded by the Rotary Club of Heirisson and supported by the Department of Education and Training, recognises the integral role principals play in the education of students in our schools," he said.
"Ms Crombie and our five Rotary Principal of the Year finalists are terrific examples of how excellent school leaders inspire students and teachers, and work with communities to help students strive toward excellence.
"Linda Crombie has been tirelessly dedicated to Babakin Primary School, near Corrigin, for nearly 25 years, which is a fantastic achievement.
"She has overcome the challenges of an isolated school to attract staff and build a strong sense of community among the school's students, their families and neighbouring schools.
"The fact that she was nominated by the Babakin Primary School P&C president, with the support of Ms Crombie's colleagues and students' parents, goes to show the significance of her achievements and how well respected she is."
Through an 'open door policy' and organising regular activities for the whole community including daily cups of tea, annual picnics, camps and sports carnivals, Ms Crombie has created a school that is a focal point for the community.
Her teaching methods and use of digital technology have impressed other teachers and schools, and she is regularly called on for advice.
The five other finalists are:
· Gail Baker, of Chapman Valley Primary School in the Geraldton region (now Deputy Principal at Kalumburu Remote Community School);
· Rick Firns, of Ashdale Primary School in Darch;
· Russell Hahn, of Blackmore Primary School in Girrawheen;
· Lindsay Hale, nominated for his work at Belmont City College in Belmont, now promoted to Director Schools for the Swan District Education Office; and
· Digby Mercer, of Coodanup Community College in Mandurah.
