Minister welcomes Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup

The amalgamated Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup will meet for the first time today.

The one-day-old shire is the youngest in the State with the amalgamation, following a Local Government Advisory Board finding that the new local government would be financially sustainable and deliver effective and efficient services to the Broomehill and Tambellup communities.

The communities of the former two shires supported the board's finding and Local Government Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich accepted the recommendation to amalgamate in March of this year.

Ms Ravlich acknowledged the efforts of both local governments in achieving this outcome.

"The new local government will provide the Broomehill and Tambellup communities with a financially strong and responsive local government, focused on providing a high level of service to its community," she said.

"The State Government is providing more than $400,000 through the Connecting Local Governments and Structural Reform (CLGSR) program in support of the voluntary amalgamation.

"This amalgamation, following those of the City of Geraldton and the Shire of Greenough and the Shire and Town of Northam, demonstrates that the Government's support of voluntary amalgamations is strengthening local governments in Western Australia by encouraging them to embrace structural reform."

Commissioner Jan Grimoldby, who will take on the role of the council, has wide experience in local government management and was recently the Commissioner for the City of Geraldton-Greenough.

Commissioner Grimoldby will be the commissioner until elections are held on Saturday, October 18 to elect a new council for the Shire of Broomehill-Tambellup.
