Local music venues get sound funding
11/7/06
Five Western Australian venues that support live contemporary music have received Government funding to address sound issues.
Culture and Arts Minister Sheila McHale said the venues would share in $61,188 through the Sound Attenuation Support Program (SASP), with a further $194,375 to be allocated through the program.
"This program aims to help operators and owners of live original contemporary music venues with a recognised history in the industry to develop sound attenuation measures," Ms McHale said.
"WA's live original contemporary music industry can only continue to develop if venues that support live and original music are supported in this way."
The Minister said the five venues would use the money to conduct acoustic audits and purchase sound reduction equipment such as acoustic panels and fittings.
"It is important to create a balance between nurturing live original music and ensuring a pleasant environment for nearby residents and workers," she said.
"This program works directly with venues to help them assess their sound issues and reduce conflict with surrounding residents."
Ms McHale said the funding was made on a dollar-for-dollar basis and the program would continue for six months and include an additional funding round and other direct support programs.
Successful applicants in this round of funding include:
Indian Ocean Hotel, Scarborough - $990:
To engage an acoustic consultant to identify ways to restrict noise leaving the bar area and impacting on the amenity of hotel accommodation guests and surrounding residents.
Maylat Pty Ltd (The Swan Hotel), North Fremantle - $26,177:
To purchase and install new ceiling treatment to the Swan Hotel basement performance space and address low-level vibration within the stage sub structure. These measures would reduce noise conflicts with the sub-leased restaurant located upstairs and with surrounding residents.
Hotel Kununurra, Kununurra - $2,475:
To engage a consultant to conduct a noise audit of the venue and develop a noise management plan to address the existing noise conflicts with the adjacent caravan park.
Fly By Night Musicians' Club Ltd, Fremantle - $6,500:
To hang black molten sound absorbent drapes to cover the southern and northern walls of the building. This will assist with the management of sound within the venue and reduce potential noise conflicts with surrounding residents.
Festival Fringe Society Of Perth (T/A Artrage), Perth - $25,046:
To install sound insulation panels to existing ceilings and walls of the Bakery performance space, and to purchase and install Raven acoustic door seals to all doors with the aim of reducing potential noise conflicts with surrounding residents.
