Grant to upgrade Jandakot base of the Royal Flying Doctor Service
17/8/07
The Jandakot base of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) will be upgraded to help the iconic organisation continue to deliver emergency health services to Western Australians.
Government Enterprises Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich today presented RFDS representatives with a Lotterywest cheque for $1million adding to a $2million grant last year.
The funding is part of a project to redevelop the Jandakot operational base and the adjoining patient transfer hangar.
The operational base was constructed in 1977 and the patient transfer hanger was acquired in the early 1960s. The ageing facilities now suffer from inadequate space and poor layout.
Architects are currently finalising plans for the redevelopment, which will provide:
- a dedicated medical cell consisting of offices and consulting rooms;
- six motel type sleeping units which will provide base staff with on-site accommodation;
- parking for four ambulances; and
- secure and appropriate storage for medical equipment and consumables.
"The RFDS is well respected and holds a special place in the hearts of many Western Australians who have experienced their life-saving services," she said.
"The new facility will offer patients and staff an environment fitting to the organisation's high level of patient care, with contemporary standards in efficiency, safety and comfort."
The RFDS operates from five bases in WA; Jandakot, Kalgoorlie, Meekatharra, Port Hedland and Derby.
Since 1988, the RFDS has received 19 Lotterywest grants to the value of $7,167,750. The majority of these grants have been linked to the purchase of replacement aircraft.
