The Commonwealth Government is running a public consultation focusing on changes to NatHERS. It opened on 10 November 2021 and will run until 16 December 2021.
You can learn more, take the survey, or upload a submission by visiting the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) consultation.
NatHERS helps people buy, build or renovate a home with better energy performance by guiding smarter design and building choices.
It is also used to meet the energy efficiency requirements of the National Construction Code. Around 90 per cent of new residential building approvals used NatHERS in 2020-21.
Next year important changes will be brought in to improve and expand NatHERS ratings, helping deliver the next generation of modern, sustainable homes for the future.
A new Whole of Home rating will include the estimated energy used by appliances, such as heating and cooling systems and hot water. On-site energy generation and storage will also be included.
Assessments for older homes, using an In Home assessment process, are also being introduced. These ratings will help householders improve the energy performance of their home, and allow fair comparisons across the market.
